About Life Compass
Life Compass is an independent publication for people starting or growing a family. We write guides, checklists and quizzes about the practical decisions that arrive with a baby — leave, insurance, paperwork, childcare, money, and what to do in what order.
What we cover
The things that have a deadline, a cost, or a form attached, and that nobody hands you a list for. Most of it is written for families in the US, where the rules differ by state and by employer, so we say where something depends on your situation rather than pretending it does not.
How we write it
- We cite our sources. Government agencies, professional bodies and primary documents first. Each guide lists what it draws on, so you can check it.
- We say what we do not know. Where the evidence is thin or the marketing is ahead of it, we say so, and we attribute clinical positions to the bodies that hold them.
- We keep it current. Rules change. When we learn something is out of date, we fix it.
What we are not
Everything here is general information, not medical, legal, financial, tax or insurance advice. We do not publish symptom lists or tell you when to call a doctor. For decisions about your own situation, speak to a qualified professional. The terms of use set this out in full.
How it is paid for
The site is free to read. Some recommendations link to providers who pay us a commission if you sign up, and we say so beside each one. It does not change what we recommend or what you pay. How we make money explains the arrangement and the rules we hold ourselves to.
