Travel with a baby packing checklist

Pack for the trip you are taking, not a fantasy expedition. Confirm travel timing and any health precautions with your pediatrician — especially for young infants. This list is logistics only.

Checklist

Documents and money

• Photo ID for adults; insurance card for baby and adults
• Pediatrician phone number saved offline
• Vaccine record photo/PDF if flying internationally or as required
• Airline/hotel confirmation screenshots accessible offline
• Payment card + small cash for tips, baggage, unexpected pharmacy stops
• Consent letter if one parent travels alone across borders (rules vary — verify)

Diapering and clothes

• Diapers: enough for travel time + one full day buffer
• Wipes (travel pack + refill in checked/overnight bag)
• Diaper cream you already use
• Disposable bags for trash and soiled clothes
• 3–5 onesies/outfits for an overnight; add 1–2 for each extra day
• Sleep clothes / sleep sack you already use at home
• Weather layer + hat appropriate to destination
• Spare adult shirt (spit-up is not theoretical)
• Compact detergent sheet or travel soap for sink laundry

Feeding

• Nursing cover only if you actually use one; otherwise skip
• Bottles/nipples for the outbound leg + wash plan on arrival
• Formula portions or ready-to-feed as your household uses (no dosing advice here)
• Breast pump + parts + cooler if you pump away from home
• Burp cloths (2–3)
• Bibs if baby uses them
• Pacifiers if you use them (+1 spare)

Sleep and comfort

• Safe travel sleep plan confirmed (pack-and-play, hotel crib — follow current guidance)
• White noise method you already use
• Familiar small sleep cue (cloth with home scent — keep clear of sleep surface per safe-sleep rules)
• Lightweight blackout option that does not create hazards
• Thermometer
• Nasal saline and bulb/aspirator if you already use them (ask clinician what’s appropriate)

Gear by trip type

• Car: rear-facing seat checked; mirror/shade if you use them safely
• Reachable day bag in the cabin/car (not trunk-only)
• Stroller or carrier decision made; carrier practiced at home once
• Flight: carrier liquids/feeding supplies accessible for security
• Flight: change of clothes in carry-on for adult and baby
• Gate-check tags ready if checking a stroller
• Overnight: night station kit (diapers, water, charger, spare onesie) bagged together

Health and misc

• Any prescribed medicines in original packaging; confirm use with clinician/pharmacist
• First-aid basics you already keep at home (bandages, etc.)
• Hand sanitizer and a small soap
• Portable charger / cables
• Laundry bag for dirties
• Do-not-pack list reviewed: untested new gadgets, excess toys, duplicate hospital-grade gear

Day-of departure

• Feed baby shortly before leaving if that matches your usual pattern
• Confirm sleep surface waiting at destination (call hotel if unsure)
• Share itinerary and pediatrician number with a non-traveling emergency contact
• Recheck car seat click and airline infant policy if flying
